Our Open Shawl pattern turns three different textured yarns into a triangular shawl with an open, lattice-like texture, worked entirely in garter stitch and variations of garter stitch on giant 20mm (US 36) needles.
The pattern uses three strands held together throughout: Chara, Vela and Maia. You knit the shawl using simple increases along both edges, with one repeated wrap-and-drop technique that creates the airy, web-like structure the finished piece is known for. Because the needles are so large and the stitch pattern only asks for one repeated technique beyond a basic increase, it's a good first shawl project even though the finished result looks more complex than the skills required to make it.
The scale works in your favour too. With needles this size and a low row count, most knitters can finish the shawl in a single weekend or even in an evening. The finished piece measures approximately 57.5cm high by 187.5cm wide, giving you plenty of length to wrap, drape or knot depending on how you want to wear it.
Because it's knit from textured and novelty yarns rather than a smooth base, the shawl adds a light layer of warmth without much weight, and the open structure means it sits easily over a shirt, dress or knitwear without feeling bulky. The garter stitch also lets each yarn's individual character come through clearly, since there's no dense fabric for texture or colour to get lost in.
