Looking for crochet shawl patterns with gradient yarns? The Gorges Shawl is crocheted using Alga, a yarn spun from organic cotton, bamboo viscose and SeaCell, a seaweed-based fibre. The blend gives a soft hand-feel, good breathability and a gentle drape, well suited to a lightweight throw for warmer days.
If you've been wondering what to make with Alga yarn or what to make with seaweed yarn more broadly, this shawl puts the gradient to work. Front loop only and back loop only stitches give the piece two distinct sides: a textured front where each colour change reads as a ridge, reminiscent of layered rock formations, and a smoother, more subtle reverse. It's this colour banding paired with the texture that makes a finished Gorges Shawl such a beautiful piece. Each row holds its own shade before shifting into the next. It's a pattern suited to an adventurous beginner or an intermediate crocheter comfortable following written instructions.
The design was inspired by the gorges of Karijini National Park in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and pays tribute to the Banjima, Innawongka and Eastern Guruma peoples, the traditional custodians of the land.
This is one of our crochet patterns which only uses two balls of yarn. Choose from either Alga with its beautiful fade effect or try it in Alga Solid for a softer tonal effect. After wet blocking, the finished shawl measures approximately 160cm wide and 77cm deep.
